How Tracing Helped my Child to Write + Free Tracing Numbers and Counting Cards Printable
Writing is one of the much-awaited milestones for preschoolers. I was expecting my son to write a little later because he's been so busy honing his gross motor skills and spent so little time to work on his fine motor skills.
If you follow the Montessori method, you'll know how important strengthening the fine motor muscles to aid the child in his writing skills in the future. But just like any other family who practice the Montessori method, I just followed my child and wait for him to be ready.

Recently, he's been on a writing spree. He'd done a lot of painting, doodling, and coloring. So I thought of re-introducing him to tracing activities by giving him these worksheets that I created and to my surprise, he liked them. He worked on them for one whole week. I'm not gonna lie, we used a lot of scratch papers but I think it's worth it. Just so you know, we always print our worksheets on scratch papers.
After a week, my son and I played "pretend school" where he pretends that he's going to school then I'm his teacher. This game is his idea by the way. I normally use this opportunity to sing with him, practice our greetings, and just do things that he likes to do related to school.
On that particular day, he chose to write on his small whiteboard. He started by attempting to write the letter i then the letter j which he said /J/ for Jarvis, his name. Then he went to town from there and actually finished writing the letters of the alphabet and attempted to write some numbers as well.

Sometimes he would ask me to show him how to write certain letters and he would erase my work and write the letter on his own. It was so fun to watch him do things on his own without the pressure from the adult or conforming to what others are doing and just enjoying learning at his own pace. I'm so happy I get to homeschool with him.
I'm certain that a week's of doing tracing activities helped him remember the strokes he needs to write a certain figure or letter. It also helps him to hold the crayon properly. He prefers to use crayons for writing and I am okay with that for now. He will use a pencil for sure when he's ready.
I am well aware that tracing is not the only activity that could help a child to write. I don't even expect that it will speed up the process of my son's writing. I merely offered the tracing worksheets as an additional activity since he likes to write and doodle anyway but I'm glad I offered it.
For Jarvis' tracing activities we use my Ultimate Tracing Worksheets which you can download from my shop HERE.
